For Asexual Awareness Week I’ve been recommending some ace/aro media on twitter. Here’s the collection.
The Crows Her Dragon’s Gate by Benjanun Sriduangkaew (short story)
Ignition Zero (webcomic)
Dust by Elizabeth Bear (novel) (n.b. the asexual relationship is also incestuous)
The Movement by Gail Simone (comic)
Selin That Has Grown in the Desert by Alex Dally MacFarlane (short story)
we come together we fall apart by Lisa Bradley (poem)
Zucchini by me (poem)
Asexual Agenda (blog)
I know these aren’t the standard recs you hear for asexual characters, but most of those are terrible, either only if you squint between the lines, negative portrayals or just plain terrible. 😐
When I was growing up all the characters who were like me were aliens, sociopaths, ill and broken, and it took me quite a few years to recover from the toxic headspace that had developed while I was figuring out what I was. It’s really nice now being able to read something and go, “Oh, we can be people too”.
